CHARLEY VARRICK (1973)

Directed by Don Siegel. Small-time hood with big-time brain unknowingly robs a bank used by the Mob to launder their money and has Mafia chasing him in the person of deadly Don Baker. Walter Matthau is perfect as the funny-sad hero, supporting cast is great. Beau tifully , cleverly scripted and directed thriller has all its elements working with naturalness as well as digital precision. Tough and humorous, savage and amusing, with diabolically ingenious twists, this classic gives us memorable portraits and adds in Matthau a true human dimension. It seems to keep improving with age.
