MY FAVORITE SPY (1951)
Vulgarian Bob Hope is an awful burlesque comic who gets talked by the U.S. Government (and a phone call by President Harry S.
Truman) into getting groomed as his suave, lady-killer double, a spy, and sent to Tangier on a mission. Along with the Bob Hope - Bing Crosby series, Hope did a number of comic thrillers solo -- after all, he had to get the girl, now and then, without competition from Crosby. "My Favorite Blonde" (1942), was with Madeleine Carroll)and had a spy plot; "They Got Me Covered" (1943), with Dorothy Lamour) was another entanglement with wartime spies in Washington; "My Favorite Brunette" (1947) reunites him with Lamour in a story of mobsters; "My Favorite Spy" (1951) is with Hedy Lamarr, one of the screen's really great beauties. Hope's adventures may be uneven but the movie is really quite funny and culminates in a vigorously amusing chase. Excellent entertainment. (Edwin Jahiel )
