THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY (1947)

A Danny Kaye vehicle, better than some, not as good as others, quite enjoyable. Starts out as the adaptation a the James Thurber story but as Hollywood cannot let well enough alone, various thrills are added. Kaye, a milquetoast under the thumbs of his domineering mother and possessive girl, compensates with fantasies, flights into unreality, in which he sees himself as a super-macho hero: a great surgeon, an RAF pilot, a riverboat gambler, a brave sea captain, etc. Bit repetitious gimmick but quite amusing. The patter number (by wife Sylvia Fine) of Anatole of Paris ( " I am Anatole of Paris - I shriek with chic") is among the nicest items in Danny's repertory. (Edwin Jahiel)
