WING AND A PRAYER (1944)

Henry Hathaway wartime film about carriers and their pilots . Starts just before the Battle of Midway. Technically very good, with admirable, crisp camerawork, well integrated studio work, newsreel fotage and miniatures. Dogfight with pilots talking to ship is quite impressive. With Don Ameche, Dana Andrews, Charles Bickford, and other good performers. Strong stuff: it doesn't play down much the American losses, does not engage into excessive Jap-bashing, does not resort to the film genre's cliches of rah-rah and of colorful, motley servicemen. Surprisingly different from routine war movies. A solid ***.
